The sunny
Western Algarve
stretches westwards from the historic town of Lagos to Europe's most
westerly point, Cape St. Vincent, and continues northwards up the
rugged western coast of
Portugal.
This is an area of wild
natural beauty and a long coastline with miles and miles of towering
cliffs, numerous wonderful sandy beaches and occasional colourful
traditional fishing villages.
Inland the mountains of
Sierra de Monchique provide a natural northern boundary for the
Algarve with cork, chestnut, pines and eucalyptus forests and
occasional pretty mountain villages affording spectacular views of the
whole south east coastline.
The vibrant historic town of
Lagos
is full of character with its old city walls and myriad of cobbled
streets lined with restaurants and shops. Lagos has a
large marina and offers a superb choice of everything from ancient
buildings to restaurants, bars, fish and farmers market, zoo, whale
and dolphin spotting boat trips and nearby water parks. The
Falfeira
district is located within walking distance of the commercial
centre, from where
Porto do Mos
beach is a few minutes drive.
Praia da Luz,
a pretty village with a great family-friendly atmosphere a
few miles west of Lagos has supermarkets, small shops, banks, Post
Office, health spas, medical & dental clinics and a terrific choice
of restaurants and bars. Praia is the Portuguese word for
beach, and the safe sandy Blue Flag Beach at Luz is
approached by an attractive palm-fringed promenade with cafe bars
and restaurants near the beach where you can sit under a large
parasol and watch the world go by! The beach offers a
wide range of watersports, kids clubs and tuition. The
coastal cliff path from Lagos and Porto do Mos goes along the cliff
top, down to Luz beach and on to Burgau and is fantastic for walkers!

Burgau
is a traditional fishing village with brightly painted houses,
narrow cobbled streets which tumble down to a sandy blue flag
beach, and a boat slip used to land the fresh fish eaten in its wonderful restaurants. The village has a wonderful
timeless quality which draws visitors back there again and again!
There is a cheap
regular bus service between
Lagos, Porto do Mos, Luz, Burgau and other local beaches.

Faro Airport
is a one hour's
drive from Praia da Luz, along the A22
motorway.
Portugal
is in the same Time Zone as Britain and Ireland
- so there is no time change
when travelling between U.K./Ireland and Portugal !
